3 Reasons Your Deck is Decaying

Internachi reports that only 40% of all decks built in the US are safe!

First, we know there are a lot of DIY decks out there. So we’d just like to point out, “there is no correlation between deck failure and whether the deck was built by a homeowner or a professional contractor.” (Internachi) The failure occurs when the deck is built improperly and is not properly maintained throughout its lifespan.

Downspouts Near Deck

  • Again, very common when the deck is built after guttering is installed. This is a relatively easy and affordable fix. For less than $10 pick up a down spout extension from the hardware store. We like these because they are easy to install, and are easily removable when doing yard work.

Sprinkler Systems Near Deck

  • This is common, especially when the deck is built some time after the sprinkler system was installed. We recommend that any sprinkler heads spraying toward the deck be adjusted, or turned off manually at the panel.

Indention Surrounding Footing Hole

  • The indention left from not filling the footing hole to an adequate height will create pooling of water. This pooling will lead to decay of the posts. Any wood surface experiencing exposure to the elements will rot, in time.
