Common Mistake Made With Holiday Lights

holiday light hanging mistakes

While we’ve been out and about doing inspections this holiday season we have seen home owners make this mistake when hanging holiday lights.

Hanging holiday lights on fascia invites water damage

What the Christmas is fascia? Fascia boards are the long, straight boards that run under the lower edge of the roof and attach to the roof trusses. A few issues can happen if lights are attached to fascia boards. Using fasteners, like nails or staples cause openings that can allow moisture to enter. This can lead to rotting, as well as other unseen damages. There is also the risk of splitting or tearing the fascia board, which will certainly cause expensive repairs down the road.

What is the best way to hang holiday lights?

Gutter clips are a great product to use when hanging your Christmas lights. They are easy to install, cause no damage, if properly used, and can be easily removed at the end of each holiday season. We recommend a product like these Halo clips.

Be careful when attaching anything to the guttering system as to not damage it. Always remember, electricity and water don’t mix! So use caution when running any electrical cords or outlets near gutters, or in areas where water might pool up.

Christmas lights are a fantastic way to celebrate the holiday season, but make sure you are decorating your home the proper way. Happy Griswalding!
